Gardening as Cultural Renewal – the Gila Crossing School Pro

The Gila Crossing Elementary School in southern Arizona was once operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. When the local tribe took it over, community members created a gardening program to teach children about their cultural heritage as farmers, to encourage healthy eating, and to foster their development and future interest in agriculture. Bad Sugar: Water Rights and Diabetes in Arizona

The Tohono O'odham and Pima Indians of southern Arizona have perhaps the highest rate of diabetes in the world. Yet the disease was virtually unknown here 100 years ago. Over the last century, the diversion of river water to upstream white settlements cost the O'odham their crops, livelihood, traditional diet, culture and health. Today, community advocates hope that restoring water and renewing culture can help improve health. This clip is excerpted fromEpisode 4 of "UNNATURAL CAUSES: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?", a ground-breaking documentary series that looks at how the social, economic and physical environments in which we are born, live, and work profoundly affect our longevity and health. The series broadcast nationally on PBS in spring 2008, and can be bought on DVD from California Newsreel, www.newsreel.org Visit www.unnaturalcauses.org to learn more.

BACKGROUND

Created by Monarch Nutrition, MoodBoost Drink is an all-natural powdered drink mix supplement.

Valerie Bertinelli’s Finding It

BACKGROUND

Finding It: And Satisfying My Hunger for Life without Opening the Fridge is the latest book written by Valerie Bertinelli, Jenny Craig’s weight loss superstar. Unlike other traditional diet books, Finding It is an inspiring memoir rather than a how-to guide to weight loss. Within this book, Valerie opens up about some very personal aspects of her life as well as how she tries so hard to maintain her public weight loss.

This book focuses more on what happens after you change your life through weight loss. She also touches on the areas of family, faith and beachwear.

Finding It is a tool that talks about what you don’t hear so often – how to keep the weight off. Most books talking about weight loss discuss only how to take the pounds off. Finding It takes on the tone of having a conversation with your best friends about some of life’s most common struggles. It is filled with humor and emotion all the way through. In the end you’ll realize that this book is an optimistic story for trying times.

PRO

  • Not a diet book, focused on weight maintenance
  • Written with humor and easy to read
  • Gives a window into the author’s personal life

CON

  • Many complaints that there is too much political commentary given by the author
  • Complaints that the book contains too much personal information and not enough weight loss information

DIET and NUTRITION

Finding It includes tips for keeping weight off after losing it, but no complete diet plan. This book focuses more on how to manage weight loss. It is not the type of book you buy particularly when you want to start losing weight.

For those readers interested in following Valerie’s preferred diet and eating plan, take a look at the Jenny Craig weight loss program.

EXERCISE

There seems to be very little information within the book about exercise. The focus of this book is more of a lighthearted approach to Valerie’s tips on keeping weight off, and some insight into her personal battle with weight.

CONCLUSION

If you are looking for a book that finally deals with the pressures of keeping weight off after you’ve lost it then Finding It: And Satisfying My Hunger for Life without Opening the Fridge could be just the book for you.

Valerie Bertinelli has written her second book on the subject of weight loss, this time focused on maintenance. This is not the typical diet book that offers step-by-step instructions on how to lose weight, what to eat and how much exercise to do each day. Finding It takes a personal look at Valerie’s challenges after she lost the weight and might help you with some of the things you could be struggling with.
